A Frida Kahlo Drawing Was Burned To Make An NFT
Are you fucking nuts BRO?
My head is spinning. Conflicting reports have come in that a Mexican entrepreneur, aka a tech bro, took a Frida Kahlo drawing, burned it after taking photos of it, and made an NFT out of it. WHAT. THE. ACTUAL. FUCK. BRO!
Vice reported that it might not be the original that was destroyed in a fiery ceremony in Miami. Martin Mobarak allegedly paid $10 million dollars for Kahlo’s Fantasmones Siniestros drawing. Then he took photos of it, turned it into a non-fungible token (NFT) on the Ethereum blockchain, and burned the drawing.
A few years ago when Bitcoin was trading at around $400 I bought 5 coins. I spent a little over $2,000 with fees to “invest” in it. I even used a Raspberry Pi to mine Bitcoins in the early years. I thought it was a fun little project and I thought Bitcoin could become a true e-currency.
Then I watched Bitcoin race to $2,000 a coin and I sold 4 coins. I made money and paid my taxes. Over the next few years, I would siphon off parts of my last Bitcoin to buy myself a new camera and other stuff.
Somewhere over that time period Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies lost their appeal to me for one important reason. Because mining them is killing our life support systems.
Do I still believe that Bitcoin or another cryptocurrency will become a global e-currency?
No. I don’t
Do I think it will replace fiat currencies?
No, I do not.
Should be ban cryptocurrency mining?
Yes, because it’s killing our life support systems and us with it.
A recent report by the White House showed that cryptocurrency mining uses up as much electricity as the entire country of Australia or Argentina.
As of August 2022, published estimates of the total global electricity usage for crypto-assets are between 120 and 240 billion kilowatt-hours per year, a range that exceeds the total annual electricity usage of many individual countries, such as Argentina or Australia. This is equivalent to 0.4% to 0.9% of annual global electricity usage, and is comparable to the annual electricity usage of all conventional data centers in the world. — via FACT SHEET: Climate and Energy Implications of Crypto-Assets in the United States
Yes, it burns up as much electricity as a fucking country. I don’t care if crypto bros say “Oh my crypto-currency switched to proof of stake mining so it can be a green e-currency!”
I don’t care, it’s all wasteful.
Want to be truly green? Turn off the mining rigs and go outside while you still can.
One of my favorite Reddit groups this year is r/Buttcoin and r/WhatsThisSnake.
Buttcoin is comedic gold as it exposes the weakness and foibles of cryptocurrencies and the tech bros that pimp them. It was there where I first heard of this travesty.
For those that don’t know, Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter and artist. She’s regarded as a feminist and LGBTQ+ icon. In other words, she was ahead of her time in the early 1940s and 1950s — she died in 1954 at the age of 47.
You’ve seen her work, it makes a statement. Some people like her work and others don’t. That’s ok. I like her work. I appreciate it and it makes me think.
I guess Kahlo’s work made tech bro Mobarak think about transitioning to the Metaverse, another tech bro fantasy world. Mobarak thought it would be a good idea to sell a shitty jpeg of the original drawing on the blockchain so that shitty digital file could be worth what the original artwork was.
That’s my guess because I’ll never know what he was really thinking OR what he hoped he would get out of this stunt.
You see, these NFTs and cryptocurrencies are the biggest Ponzi schemes in the world. It’s one big electric-consuming Fugazi. It’s Tulipmania Web 3.0 and it’s making all of us look stupid, whether you own cryptocurrencies or not.

YouTuber Logan Paul lost over $11 million on an NFT. He’s a dumbass. We’re dumbasses for letting them waste all that electricity.
No one extrapolates where that electricity comes from or how it’s made. There’s a high probability it comes from burning fossil fuels, which generates more greenhouse gases. I don’t have to tell where this is headed if we don’t change course now.
One day in the future, when our planet becomes inhospitable to us, there will be some tech bro shill somewhere with his GPU rig trying to mine the last Bitcoin with no one left to sell to.
Let’s be smart for once and stop this madness while we still can.
PS: Here’s the video of the burning of Frida Kahlo’s drawing.
