You Don’t Need A Tesla To Fight Climate Change

Tesla cars are all the rage right now and Musk touts them as the best way to fight climate change. Of course, he’s got a vested interest to keep his stock price “going to the moon.” So he’ll say whatever is necessary to sell his cars. On the other hand, I don’t think you don’t need a Tesla to fight climate change. All you need is your two feet, a bicycle, and maybe take a bus once in a while.

Everyone forgets that the majority of the electricity we consume comes from burning fossil fuels. Granted, if we charge electric vehicles and drive them around we won’t belch out the exhaust, but we forget about the environmental debt of the lithium batteries.

Lithium mining is very destructive to the environment, it uses a lot of water and creates nasty byproducts. So those batteries in your Telsa destroyed the environment in a country that had lithium resources.

That’s not the entirety of it, at some point, you’ll have to replace those batteries. Not only does this cost the owner around $20,000 but you get to do this at least once during the life of the vehicle. The environmental debt keeps piling up.

You see, this is the fallacy. The solutions being proposed by capitalistic titans of industry are just smoke and mirrors. No one ever thinks beyond how all the parts and materials got to the car in the first place. It reminds me a lot of buying meat at the grocery store.

You never see the animal get slaughtered, you just get the nice cutlets. You never have to think about the fear and terror the animal senses when it’s about to be killed in a slaughterhouse.

Either way, if you drive a gas-powered vehicle, a hybrid, or a pure battery-powered car, there will always be an environmental footprint.

So what can you do about this? Simple, walk or bike.

I’ll be getting the “your a commie libtard” comments shortly but if you ever travel to Europe you’ll note just how pedestrian-friendly it is. Of course, Europe is also very mass transit-friendly but people still drive cars. I get it, sometimes you don’t want to be on a bus or train. That’s Ok, but the default option is pedestrian or mass transit travel.

We, in the United States, fucked this up royally. For decades we forced people into cars at the expense of mass transit and pedestrian-friendly paths.

The town I grew up in operated a trolley from 1909 to 1929 until cars killed the demand for it. Americans loved the status of owning a car.

Today, my town and the others along the old trolley line choke on cars. There are long lines at the traffic lights as people navigate to go grocery or retail shopping. No one walks anywhere or even considers taking a bus, because that’s not in the American psyche. That’s not our default method of travel.

I read a report that said 100 companies are responsible for +70% of greenhouse gas emissions. The majority of them are all energy producers. Our world has an energy addiction.

We need energy, there’s no doubt about that. A country’s energy production is strategic, why do you think we go to blow up Middle East countries? So why don’t we cultivate a sustainable way of energy production through renewable sources?

Oh yes, that’s right. That’s a commie libtard agenda. USA! USA! USA!

So what can you do? The lowest-cost way you can fight climate change is to walk. If it’s safe to walk then head down to your grocery store to buy a bag of groceries. I love watching old Asian women pushing their foldable shopping carts to the farmer’s markets in Chinatown. I think that’s smart, they get exercise and get fresh food. Win-win for them.

Of course, this is a moot point if you live in rural areas where stores and people are very far apart. The next lowest-cost way to fight climate change is to bicycle. That’s a wonderful way to get exercise and make you feel young. With a small basket in the front or in the back, you fit one to two grocery bags in there and feel a sense of accomplishment!

The last low-cost method is to take mass transit if available where you live. While this might not be the best use of your time if you’re on a schedule, it does let you get to places without having a car. Mass transit only works to net reduce greenhouse gases(GHG) if people use it. An empty bus or train car spews a lot of GHG into the environment, so you want to fill them up and take those cars off the road.

The short of it is this.

Walk. Bike. Take a bus or train. These small acts help us reduce the need for dirty energy production and save you a ton of money by NOT buying a Tesla.
